Luigi Battisti as “The good primeval man”

Luigi Battisti is one of the few Italian abstract expressionists in watercolor.

His work is lively, lyrical, full of movement and very upbeat. He uses the technique of the “stains” and aims for (and achieves) the impression of innocence, balancing conscious with subconscious and sophistication with intuition.

Battisti’s inspiration is sensuous and philosophical. His paintings refer to the fluidity of air and water. His visual expression is based on recalled images simplified by the passage of time (where memory is seldom complete), thus becoming freer.

He aspires (intellectually) to go back in time, to regain the innocence of a primitive man and openness that allows an unrestrained flow of creative ideas.

His struggle is directed to overcome formalist tendencies ingrained by academic training and years of teaching. He really goes inside himself and paints from the unconscious.

These watercolors give the feelings to be in a flowing stream, which allows the body to feel liberated, invigorated, and purified by the force rushing over. Water and air, clouds and gurgles are liberating element in his art; they purify and clean.

With watercolor his spirit can have a direct link to the medium; transparent washes and brush strokes keep the ideas pure and uncluttered, and the spirit is free. There are no layers to hinder the spirit, which flows like water and air, carrying the color freely in any direction.

They are a memory trip through time seeking that which was meaningful: a spiritual quest.
