Giorgio Griffa, poet of minimalism

17 giugno 2010

Often we say that violence resides in smallness.

For Giorgio Griffa we can confirm the opposite: softness resides in grandness. The majority of his works are quite noticeable in size, thus creating a peculiar contrast with the minimalism of the graphic signs.

On the gray-brown colour of the canvas, light, plain, cerulean stripes indicate possibilities of lost horizons. No matter if the horizons are horizontal or vertical: one perceives the line of possibility through the eyelids.

Minimalism is generally attributed to the art of the Far-East. Giorgio Griffa re-interpretes minimalism as a way to expand the infinite possibilities of imagination.

One is transported far away in search of the sunshine which is gradually downing; of the clouds in perpetual mutation, like the explanation of the Chinese I-Ching suggests.

Lines, lines, lines: broken and continuos, like the alternance of the day and night, earth and sky, Summer and Winter,…

Giorgio Griffa encompasses a year of Nature in those traits of Eternity.
